Mainland vs. Hawaii

Jeff "The Snowman" Monson (ATT) vs. Abraham "Kumu" Cambra (Grappling Unlimited)

Jeff is a black belt under Ricardo Liborio. He is a 2x ADCC champion, former Pac-10 wrestling champion, former UFC #1 contender, and has won many MMA and grappling matches all over the world. He trains with the American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida and operates his own affiliate school in his hometown of Olympia, Washington. Kumu is a black belt under Egan Inoue. He is one of Hawaii's most respected heavyweight grapplers, having competed successfully in both MMA and submission grappling shows throughout the islands. He is the head instructor at Egan Inoue's school Grappling Unlimited, where he trains in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Rafael Lovato Jr. (Saulo Ribeiro) vs. Niko Vitale (808 Fight Factory)

Rafael is a black belt under Carlos Machado. He has earned the status among many people in the sport as America's most accomplished jiu-jitsu player, after hitting a grand slam last year by winning black belt divisions at the European, Brazilian National, Pan-American, and World championship. He trains with Saulo and Xande Ribeiro in San Diego, California and operates his own school in his hometown of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Niko has become one of Hawaii's most decorated MMA fighters, after having a standout football career at the University of Hawaii. He won the X-1 tournament in January and has wins over elite grappling based fighters, such as Todd Medina, Matt Lindland and Yushin Okami. He is a veteran of the UFC, Strikeforce, X-1, IFL, Super Brawl, and Icon Sport. Niko teaches and trains out of 808 Fight Factory in Waipahu, Hawaii.

Jeff Glover (Paragon) vs. Rylan Lizares (Icon Sport)

Jeff is a black belt under Ricardo "Franjinha" Miller. He became one of the youngest Americans to achieve this rank and has taught and trained out of Paragon in Santa Barbara, California and Cobra Kai in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is one of the most popular American jiu-jitu players in the country due to his skill level and entertaining style. Rylan is a brown belt under Pedro Sauer. He is one of Hawaii's brightest up and comers having won many titles, while displaying a very dynamic game. Last summer, he had a strong 3rd place finish in the Mundials middleweight brown belt division, only behind Kron Gracie (division champ) and Otavio Souza (absolute champ). He currently teaches and trains out of Icon Sports Martial Arts in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Simpson Go (Cobra Kai) vs. Luke Hacker (Longman)

Simpson is the first person to receive a black belt under American jiu-jitsu pioneer Marc Laimon. He has won multiple jiu-jitsu and submission grappling titles all over the country and is the defending 2006 ADCC North American Trials winner. He currently teaches and trains out of Cobra Kai in Las Vegas, Nevada. Luke Hacker is a brown belt under Bruno Ewald. In 2004, he earned the award of "Outstanding Competitor" at the Maui Open. In 2006, he placed 3rd in the Pan-Ams featherweight purple belt division, on the same day that Simpson finished second in the super-featherweight purple belt division. Luke also won the NAGA-Hawaii championship. He trains with the Longman Jiu-Jitsu team on the island of Kauai in Hawaii.

Mike Fowler (LIMAA) vs. Sidney Silva (Brazilian Freestyle)

Mike is a black belt under Lloyd Irvin. He achieved this rank faster than most people ever to train in the sport. He has won jiu-jitsu and submission grappling matches all over the world, which includes wins over Renzo Gracie and Saulo Ribeiro at the 2007 ADCC World Championship. He is the head instructor at Team Purebred/Lloyd Irvin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, where he trains on the island of Guam. Sidney Silva is a black belt under Romolo Barros. He is a veteran of Rumble on the Rock, Shooto Hawaii, Icon Sport, and WEC. He has also won numerous jiu-jitsu and submission grappling matches. He teaches and trains with MMA, jiu-jitsu, and submission grappling stars alike at both Cobra Kai and Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Nevada. Joel is a world famous longboard surfer turned jiu-jitsu brown belt under Rodrigo Medeiros. Tudor's success and admiration was a major factor in the longboard revival of the 1990's. He eventually gained the same success and enthusiasm for jiu-jitsu where he won the Pan-Ams in 2006. He trains with the BJJ Revolution team in San Diego, California.

Women's Gi Day vs. Women's No-Gi Day

GTA News: Best of the West 2006 Report, Photo Galleries & Results

OTM NewsClick read more below for Results and complete photo galleries.

On Sunday, April 23, 2006 the second “Best of the West No-Gi Submission Grappling Championships” took place in the Hall of Champions at Long Beach City College in Long Beach, California.

The event was extremely well organized and ran very smoothly by the joint efforts of OnTheMat.com and GrapplingTournaments.com. The event also gained a lot of support from some of the best sponsors in Mixed Martial Arts, including the OTM Fight Shop, OnTheMat.com, TapouT, Sinister, Gameness, Bad Boy, DaHui, Rockstar, and Rated’s GrapplingRatings.com.

The twelve referees for the event were all jiu-jitsu experts certified and experienced in the rules of both jiu-jitsu and submission grappling. Their were over 600 men, women, and children from all over the world competing at every level from beginner to advanced and the super fight headlining the main event featured Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt Ryron Gracie and Migliarese black belt Rick Macauley.

Both fighters are young, well-liked, jiu-jitsu studs that I expect will be seeing a lot of each other in the years to come. Okay so leading into the Best of the West, everyone was anticipating the Rick Macauley vs. Ryron Gracie showdown.

In one corner, there was Rick Macauley. Over the last few years one would be hard pressed to find a more active, exciting, and innovative fighter in the grappling game. In 2005 alone, Rick had over 75 fights, competed at the ADCC trials, and has beaten some of the world's most elite submission experts. It's great to see how fast and dangerous his game has progressed in the past few years.

In the other corner, there was Ryron Gracie. Son of Rorion, grandson of Helio, and the current torchbearer of the legendary............. CLICK READ MORE BELOW...

Passing the Guard brings MMA Action to Television

OTM NewsAgent2600 writes "

Tough Media

For the past year, residents of the Los Angeles and surrounding areas have been treated to Mixed Martial Arts action as a part of their regular Saturday evening programming. In April of 2004, Ed Soares and Jorge Guimaraes introduced Passing the Guard to new audiences in the United States. Originally broadcast in Brazil, Passing the Guard brings to local television what most fans of MMA only get to read about on websites and magazines. Passing the Guard is the first television show in the United States dedicated to covering the sport of MMA and getting the behind the scenes to areas rarely seen by fans.
With its viewer ship reaching exponential growth and its new season being newly broadcast in Hawaii, Passing the Guard is quickly establishing itself as a respected news source. We caught up with Ed Soares the producer of Passing the Guard to get the details on his television show.

How did Passing the Guard gets started in the U.S.?

I went over to Japan with Chuck Liddell when he fought Quinton Jackson in the 2003 Pride Grand Prix. While I was there, I ran into Jorge Guimaraes, who I’ve known for a long time. While I was there Jorge told me about this MMA show that he was producing, and he invited me to film while he conducted interviews. At the time the show was only being broadcast in Brazil. I asked him who was doing the interviews in the U.S. and he told me that he was not able to do interviews in the U.S. due to his budget. I thought that this was an incredible opportunity to bring this unique show, which was a first of its kind to a U.S. audience. A couple of months later, Jorge and I began filming the first of the episodes that would premiere here in the U.S. Passing the Guard made its official debut in the U.S. KDOC-TV in April of 2004.
